Genre Writing Tips: Sci-fi

Hello all!
It has been awhile. (Mostly because of looking at bookish candles on Instagram but shhhhh.)

Today I'm trying something different, as seeing that it is school season, and college is going to be eating up a ton of my time.
I tend to dabble in many different genres of writing and I've come a loooooong way from when I was a bitty writer just starting out. :P

I used to write sci-fi (and still do from time to time), and here are some tips and tools I wish I had when I had written it. XP
Hope you find these helpful! :D

b/c I'm a big star wars fan XD

Tips when writing sci-fi:

Unexpectedly clear details about something no one has ever seen before are the best.
  • describing a different animal you made up, or some form of weapon/ tool. Make the reader see it, because they really want to. :D If you can, explain how it works/ what fuels it too.

Add something you've always wanted to see/have.
  •  a dresser that rotates your clothes so you always have something new to wear. (Kinda useless but... kinda cool?) Or maybe you've always wanted to have a search bar for your house whenever you lose something. A cure for a disease, an app that makes the weather around your house change, a tissue box that never runs out of tissues. XD

Physics are real...but you can ignore them sometimes.
  • when writing about space especially. Hyperspace/ lightspeed/ warping to go faster and wormholes/portals. Add in cool planets you would want to visit: planets that rain diamonds, planets that are just made up of a city, a planet that has so many moons, there are solar eclipses every day.

Spaceshipsssssss -insert Lego movie reference-
  • if the story is in space: make the starships cool! (my personal preference. XD)

A bit of a given here, but Aliens
  • Make up your own cultures and species and languages. It never has to be perfect, but I do love a good alien in my sci-fi stories. :P  Humans can get boring sometimes.
  • and robots: make your own AI if you want that can do things from clean things to translate every language to fueling vehicles.

And some tools:

Some stuffs for inspiration I would recommend:

And that is about all I have scrounged up from my brain today. Let me know if this was helpful in any way! I'd love to hear your feedback on it.

Some other genres I will be probabaly be posting about: Historical Fiction, Fantasy, and Dystopian. Let me know if there are any others you would like me to post about. :D

Do you have a favorite science-fiction book, movie, or TV show? My favorites of all three have to be Star Wars. XD

Hope you all have a wonderful beginning of the school year!
Keep smiling! -Saphira :)
